Hi Marc! What a great thing having you playing at Lief Festival, on the 3th of September on So tell us…how’re you doing?
How am I doing? I’m extremely busy working on so many things right now but having a great time doing it!
You’re a more than welcome guest in our country. What do you think of the party people in The Netherlands?
One of my first shows in Europe was with Magda and Troy over at the Paradiso upstairs with Ricardo, Zip and Sammy downstairs. It was one of those life changing moments and formed my impression of the Netherlands – you guys know how to throw a party!
How and when did you get into the (electronic) music scene?
I was always into electronic music but was more into New Wave and experimental music but after living in the Detroit techno world in the 90’s I soon realized what I needed to do…Make techno.
Any exciting upcoming things planned for Minus and yourself we shouldn’t miss?
I am now devoting all my energy and time to Items&Things – a label that Troy Pierce, Magda and I are running. Apart from working on all the new releases from some talented newcomers, I am piecing together an album for a fall release.
What artists do you think we should keep an eye on and are on the rise in your opinion?
For my style of music, darker, weirder, funkier I am really behind our latest batch of releases…Madato and Danny Benedettini. We have a compilation coming out soon that will showcases ome other unknowns from around the world that are really making some amazing stuff.
What do you think about techno / minimal becoming more and more mainstream?
I feel it and I am trying all my best to take a step back and head more underground to where I can find my flavour and my sound. I am hoping that i can bring more people to the good stuff that lurks beneath the surface if you look a little bit harder.
What do you think of the current (housy) sound of techno? Been there done that ? Or a welcome development in the techno sound?
Well it’s true that “minimal” took a wrong turn in the past 2 years and left us with cold, hookless and somewhat boring music. House music was a refreshing alternative but I think too much house is just as bad as too much minimal…there needs to be a balance in the middle somewhere…Somewhere between Chicago and Detroit. That’s where the gold lies.
Many people, idealise dj-ing. Playing sets in packed clubs and crowded festivals in the weekend and having leisure time during weekdays. Can you tell us something about the down sides / reality of your dj life?
For each 2 hour show i may play, there are hours and hours spent getting there, trying to get an ounce of sleep and traveling back or to the next show. It’s really rough but of course the reward outweighs any downside.
The translation of the dutch word “Lief” in English is “sweet” or “love”. What do you love beside dj-ing and producing?
Can I say my synthesizers? I do love them! Other than that, of course food. I love Synths, Food and technology. And some other things….. ;)
Looking forward to play at Lief Festival?
I am very much looking forward to playing! It’s not a summer until you’ve played at a festival in the Netherlands!
Thank you so much for your time! We are so much looking forward to see you at Lief Festival!!
